The Medes Are Scripturally Prophesied to Destroy Babylon
Isaiah 13:17–19
“Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them… And Babylon… shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.”
Jeremiah 51:11
“The LORD has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it.”
These verses explicitly identify the Medes as the nation YHWH uses to destroy Babylon.
Babylon’s destruction is likened to Sodom and Gomorrah — sudden, catastrophic, and irreversible — indicating end-time fulfillment (see Revelation 18:8).
Who Are the Medes Today? → Iran
Historical Background:
The Medes were an ancient Indo-Iranian people who lived in what is now northwestern Iran.
The capital of ancient Media was Ecbatana — present-day Hamadan, Iran.
The Medo-Persian Empire (Daniel 5:28) combined the Medes and Persians — the Persians being the dominant name for modern Iran.
Modern Iran = Persia = Descendants of the Medes and Persians
The Medes are geographically and ethnically linked to modern Iran.
Iran is the only major nation in that region that both:
Retains its ancient lineage (Persia/Media)
Is hostile toward a Babylon-type Western system
Babylon Is Attacked by All Nations — But the Medes Are Uniquely Named
Jeremiah 50:9
“For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country…”
Jeremiah 51:28
“Prepare against her the nations… with the kings of the Medes…”
Babylon’s destruction is part of a multi-national assault — “an assembly of great nations.”
But the Medes are the only nation named specifically — showing they play a leading role.
Iran (Modern Medes) and the Last Days Global War
Iran is currently at odds with:
The United States (a strong contender for symbolic Babylon)
Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Western powers
Iran is aligned with:
Russia, China, and other Eastern powers (Ezekiel 38–39 overlaps?)
Revelation 18 describes the end-time Babylon as a global commercial superpower hated by many kings of the earth (Rev 17:16–18)

In modern geopolitics, Iran fits the role of the Medes - opposing globalist Babylon, capable of unleashing “fire” (missiles, nuclear war), and forming part of a global alliance that turns on Babylon.

The Medes (Iran) are named.
Babylon is surrounded by nations in global war.
YHWH stirs up the Medes as a weapon of His vengeance.
Babylon is suddenly destroyed (Isaiah 13, Jeremiah 50–51, Revelation 17–18).
The Medes are modern-day Iran.
YHWH stirs them up to destroy the end-time Babylon, which is symbolic of a globalist, immoral, economically dominant empire.
This happens during a war involving many nations, but Iran (the Medes) is named as a chief participant.
The destruction is divine judgment and will be as sudden and complete as Sodom and Gomorrah.
